Iñigo Martinez And Peru Nolaskoain Suspended For Athletic’s Next La Liga Match Against Girona
Monday night’s 3-0 loss to Levante turned Athletic Club’s dark season entirely black. Not only are the Lions now firmly planted in the relegation zone, manager Eduardo Berizzo has been fired and left-back Cristian Ganea was injured. With new manager Gaizka Garitano now in charge the team wants to put the defeat in the rearview mirror, but that will be hard to do because of the consequences it has created.
Iñigo Martinez was shown a yellow card in the 65th minute against Levante and Peru Nolaskoain was given a straight red after a VAR review. Both defenders will be suspended for the team’s next La Liga match which will take place on Monday night at the San Mamés against Girona.
Garitano is in a very difficult position. He has been tasked with guiding Athletic out of the relegation zone and will coach his first La Liga game without two key players. Unai Nuñez and the recently recovered Yeray will be the only two center-backs available which leaves the manager with some tough decisions to make. Add in the fact that Mikel Balenziaga and Yuri Berchiche will also be unavailable, and likely Ganea, Garitano won’t be left with many options to choose from in a game that Athletic must win.
