Iker Muniain Apologizes To Athletic Club Fans After Embarrassing 3-0 Loss To Levante
Athletic Club’s 3-0 loss to Levante on Monday night was hard to watch. The players knew it and the fans felt it as the Lions moved to a historic 13 straight games without a win in league play. After the match Captain Iker Muniain took a moment to address the issue. He didn’t hold anything back as he called on his teammates to keep their heads held high while also apologizing to the fans.
“It is a tremendously hard moment that we are living in right now. After the Cup win we thought, perhaps, we could get a little boost in the league until they scored a goal that put that to rest. We started the second half with the intention of coming back, although we saw what happened. You have to raise your head because the season goes on. More than points you have to put all your heart into this and getting out of this situation. We do a lot of things well, but we need to correct others. We apologize to the fans and in these moments we need them to be with us. I have always said that we are 200% with the coach and my teammates are too. He is the person with whom we have to get out of this situation.”
It’s clear that changes are needed at Athletic Club. The Lions currently find themselves 18th in the La Liga table and fans are calling for the firing of manager Eduardo Berizzo. Some sources in Bilbao claim that he will meet with Josu Urrutia on Tuesday to discuss the present and future of the team. If the Argentine does leave his post the expectation is that Bilbao Athletic manager Gaizka Garitano would take his place.
