Bilbao Athletic rebounded from a three game winless streak on Saturday when they defeated Langreo 5-1 at Lezama. Manager Gaizka Garitano told reporters after the match that it was a difficult first half, but things got much easier after Iñigo Vicente scored the team’s third goal. He refused to single out the goalscorers, making sure to praise everyone’s contribution in the big win.

“It was a difficult first half, although it got easier after we scored the third goal. Our opponents were playing very well until that moment and we played with great pleasure. Iñigo Vicente did a lot of damage and when he scored our third goal the game was over. We have improved a lot defensively and we have already done things well in attack, although in the first half we were missing one thing or another. It’s everyone’s job to help the team win. You can’t just praise the goalscorers since they are not characterized by their defensive contributions. The defenders hold the team. Winning is a merit of all.”

Garitano went on to praise the fact that many of his young players have improved quite a bit so far this season. He also mentioned that Asier Benito and Iñigo Muñoz are expected to return from their injuries soon and that Gorka Pérez has fully recovered and can be integrated back into the team. Vitor San Bartolomé was taken off early in the second half, but that was out of precaution.

“Some of the players I see much better than when they started. Every day I’m seeing a better team and better players. That is the goal and the team doesn’t lack quality. We are there and fighting every day. Despite all the losses I see a lot of growth in some of the young players. We hope to have Benito and Muñoz back soon. Gorka Pérez has already recovered from his dislocated shoulder. Victor was taken off early because he had some cramping, nothing serious. He’s played six or seven straight matches and we have to protect him. He has quality.”

With the big win Bilbao Athletic now sit four points off of the promotional playoff zone of the league table. They will be looking to make up even more ground on Sunday when they travel to take on Sporting in what will be a difficult match.
