Iñigo Vicente Magic Leads Bilbao Athletic To 5-1 Win Over Langreo At Lezama
Bilbao Athletic got back to their winning way on Saturday after going three straight games without a victory. Gaizka Garitano started his strongest lineup as the Katxorros hosted Langreo at Lezama in what promised to be a difficult game. The hosts were in complete control from the start and it immediately looked like it was going to be a game full of goals.
In the 16th minute Jon Rojo sent in a cross that found Asier Villalibre at the far post. The striker rose high and placed his header past the goalkeeper to give Bilbao Athletic an early and deserved 1-0 lead. Langreo immediately began looking for an equalizer and it wouldn’t take them long to respond. Seven minutes later the visitors were awarded a free kick and Daniel López’s cross sailed over everyone and bounced into the back of the net.
With the score now level Bilbao Athletic started to send even more players forward to join the attack and would be rewarded just before the halftime whistle. In the 43rd minute the Langreo keeper slipped when attempting a goal kick. Victor San Bartolomé headed a pass forward to Iñigo Vicente who made a run into the box as the keeper rushed to clear the ball. The 20-year-old was able to chip the ball over the keeper to make it 2-1, while Unai Etxebarria would have to make one impressive save before going into the break.
Bilbao Athletic would strike again off of the kickoff in the second half with an exciting attack down the right wing. Victor dribbled past a defender and into the box before sending a dangerous low cross into the middle. A defender was able to get a touch to the ball but it fell to Vicente who immediately struck a shot that gave the Katxorros a 3-1 lead and even more control of the match.
The pressure was on as Villalibre had the chance to add a fourth after being played in on goal by Unai Vencedor, however the keeper made a fantastic kick save. Despite a strong stand from the Langreo defense the Katxorros wouldn’t be denied for long. In the 62nd minute Vicente sent a pass over the top of the defense to Gaizka Larrazabal. The winger chipped the ball over the keeper and headed it into the goal on the other side to make it 4-1.
Bilbao Athletic would get their fifth and final goal in the 78th minute thanks to Larrazabal drawing a penalty. Villalibre calmly finished from the spot to give the Katxorros a 5-1 lead that would stand until the final whistle, thanks in part to some impressive saves from Etxebarria. The win saw Bilbao Athletic move to within four points of the promotional playoff zone of the league table and they will try to move even closer on Sunday as they travel to face off with Sporting.
