Alberto Uribe-Echevarría Is Committed To Running For Athletic Club President Despite Surprise Candidacy Announcement From Aitor Elizegi
When Alberto Uribe-Echevarría officially announced his candidacy for Athletic Club President on Thursday he did so with the understanding that he would be running unopposed. All other potential candidates had backed out of the elections which meant that the former club Accountant would become the new President without the need for voting. However, everything changed very quickly.
On Friday Aitor Elizegi announced his candidacy just 48 hours after issuing a statement that he would not be running in the elections. The famous Bizkaian chef and businessman said that all of the conditions were now in place for him to step forward and highlighted the fact that he had received such tremendous support which led him to officially enter the Presidential race.
Elizegi’s announcement came as a complete surprise and was a puzzling turn of events for Uribe-Echevarría’s team according to sources. The hardest thing for the former Accountant was to come to the decision to run and announce his candidacy. Now that he has taken the step forward he is committed to the project and has no plans to back down or withdraw.
The next few days will be of utmost importance for both candidates who are expected to reveal their Board of Directors, as well as start sharing their ideas and vision for Athletic. They will need to collect signatures from at least 5% of supporting Socios who are eligible to vote, roughly 2,000, by 8 December to formalize their candidacies before being officially presented on 12 December. Voting is scheduled to take place on 27 December.
