Athletic Club Deny Meetings With Aitor Elizegi and Alberto Uribe-Echevarría At Ibaigane
The Athletic Presidential election news has been a whirlwind over the last few days. First it was reported that Aitor Elizegi had decided to run, but after visiting the club’s headquarters at Ibaigane and examining the accounts he decided to withdraw his name. Then, on Thursday, it was reported that Alberto Uribe-Echevarría had a meeting with the current Management Committee and was in the process of stepping forward as a candidate.
Later in the day Athletic moved to put an end to the rumors but issuing a statement denying that they had met with either Elizegi or Uribe-Echevarría. The press release went on to say that they haven’t shared the club’s accounts with anyone and that no Socio has even asked for them.
When addressing the rumored meeting with Uribe-Echevarría the club said that he had not visited Ibaigane because he recently resigned from his duties, along with the rest of the Board of Directors back on 15 November. However, the press release did not mention anything about his potential candidacy.
Athletic issued a similar statement back on 12 May to deny that a meeting had taken place with Eduardo Berizzo while Kuko Ziganda was still the coach of the first team. On 31 May Berizzo was announced as the new manager. This may not be the same type of situation and Athletic have vehemently denied that any meeting has taken place at Ibaigane, but fans are impatiently waiting to know who, if anyone, will actually step forward as a Presidential candidate for the December elections.
Athletic Club’s public statement reads as follows:
“Athletic Club wishes to deny to its members certain statements that have been made by some media today:
In relation to the information published about an alleged meeting held in Ibaigane in with Alberto Uribe-Echevarría, a resigned member of the former Board of Directors, would have participated, this entity wishes to recall that Alberto Uribe-Echevarría has ceased his duties since the beginning of the electoral period, for which he does not carry out any type of activity or attend meetings in the club’s facilities.
In relation to the published information in which it is stated that the Club has delivered certain documentation in Ibaigane, this entity wishes to state that it has not received any request or delivered any financial or economic documentation to any Socio.
Athletic Club has at its members’ and associates’ disposal all the documentation approved in the last ordinary General Assembly – on the website and in different digital media forms – which reflects in a faithful and audited way the economic and patrimonial situation of the Club, which we qualify as excellent, there being a positive net equity of €134 million as of 30 June, 2018 and an additional €76 million provisional fund, without counting a budgeted surplus for the 2018-2019 year of €60.2 million.
In line with the denied information and in relation to the electoral period in which the Club is immersed, Athletic Club wishes to recall that in addition to the entity’s own Statutes, it is the current legislation that determines the necessary requirements to be a candidate for the Presidency of the Club. Among them, it is mandatory to endure as the beginning the mandate of 15% of the annual expenditure budget, as established since 1990 in the Sports Law, a requirement that all the Athletic Club Board of Directors have completed since that date.”
