Unai Simón Makes His Case For Athletic’s Top Goalkeeper With Another Impressive Performance
Unai Simón was the revelation of Athletic Club at the beginning of the season. The 21-year-old was thrust into the starting lineup for the first game of the year and put in a phenomenal showing. He would go on to feature six more times before seeing Iago Herrerín take the starting role after returning from injury. Many fans weren’t happy to see Simón benched and his performance against Huesca on Wednesday night showed why.
Despite the fact that Athletic were leading 4-0, Simón was still called on to make several saves. The Lezama product was able to stop two shots from Chimy, one of which was a point blank effort in the box, before eventually robbing Sastre of a Golazo with a diving save at the far corner. He also did all the small things perfectly such as claiming crosses, getting involved in the passing game, and being a vocal leader for his backline.
Every time Simón has played this season he’s looked special. He’s done everything from making unbelievable saves to being a leader at such a young age and it’s become impossible to ignore. At this point the starting goalkeeper role is still Herrerín’s to lose and the 30-year-old hasn’t played poorly at all. He’s made all the saves that he’s supposed to make, but Simón continues to take it one step further and seems to be doing the impossible every time he’s on the pitch.
After Wednesday’s game Eduardo Berizzo took the time to praise both goalkeepers, saying that the club is fortunate to have two very good players at the position. That being said, Simón’s performance against Huesca was another prime example of the quality and potential that he possesses. The 21-year-old is a truly special talent and it may only be a matter of time before he earns the starting role. Unai Simón may be viewed as the club’s keeper of the future, but he’s already proving that he can be that player right now.
