Cristian Ganea “I Knew That My Day Would Come”
Cristian Ganea has finally made his Athletic debut, becoming the 617th player to do so in the club’s history. The 26-year-old came on for Aritz Aduriz in the 72nd minute of Wednesday’s Copa del Rey match against Huesca and looked impressive at the San Mamés. After the game he spoke with AthleticTV and was clearly excited to have played his first game in the Zurigorri shirt.
“Finally my debut came! The boss told me to trust and give everything. I’m very happy. I thank my teammates who trusted me, as well as my family and friends. It’s been three long months, but I haven’t lowered my head. I am aware that I have come from a lower league. There are 25 players in the squad, but I knew that the day would come to make my debut and now this gives me more confidence. I’ve been training on both sides over the past few months, but I’ve always said I feel more comfortable on the left. The coach wanted to try me there and I think I did well. What struck me the most is the fans and who they treat you, because when you need something they support you. I believe that I played a good game and I will go to Valencia with more confidence.”
With Yuri Berchiche suspended for two more league games and Mikel Balenziaga injured, Ganea could be an option to start against Levante on Monday night. It will be up to Eduardo Berizzo to make the ultimate decision, but the Romanian says that he is ready for the challenge. Athletic’s 4-0 win over Huesca has certainly raised confidence and the Lions will be hoping to build on that momentum moving forward.
