Bilbao Athletic/Basconia Defeat Red Bull Salzburg B 2-1 In Friendly At Lezama
Wednesday was a special day at Lezama as Athletic welcomed visitors from Red Bull Salzburg. Gaizka Garitano led a combined team of Bilbao Athletic and CD Basconia players in a friendly against Salzburg’s B team in what proved to be a good test for both sides. The two famous youth academies put in exciting performances but it was the Basques who came away on top.
Garitano started the match with a lineup of Etxebarria, Areso, Luengo, Gorka Pérez, Arrieta, Eguiluz, Salado, Gandiaga, Oteo, Córdoba, and Morcillo. Just 23 minutes into the game Areso surrendered a penalty to the visitors who were able to capitalize and take an early 1-0 lead. It was an intense first half that didn’t feel much like a friendly and Salzburg took their lead into the break.
The Austrians changed all 11 players to start the second half, but Garitano only brought on five new players – Atangana, Arberas, Estrada, Aguirre, and Ewan Urain. Rudi would come on a bit later in the game. Urain was able to draw the Katxorros level in the 49th minute when he put the ball in the back of the net after the Salzburg keeper made a mistake. Aguirre would then score the winning goal in the 83rd minute with a free kick shot from well outside the box.
It was interesting to see three Lezama players who are currently on loan – Eguiluz, Gandiaga, and Atangana – all get the chance to play in this match as they were tested by Garitano. In the end, this friendly was a great opportunity for both teams to challenge themselves against a different level of competition. As is usually the case, Sporting Director José María Amorrortu watched the game along with coaches from Red Bull Salzburg who were visiting Lezama.
