Sunday’s draw against Getafe was bad for Athletic in more than one way. Not only have the Lions now gone a club record 12 straight games in La Liga without a win, they will also end the weekend in the relegation zone of the table. However, that isn’t the only concerning thing about the match. Eduardo Berizzo may have just lost two players for an extended period of time.

Raúl García and Mikel Balenziaga were both forced to leave the game early in the second half and were replaced by Iñigo Córdoba and Peru Nolaskoain. After the match the club announced that García has suffered a left knee strain and Balenziaga is dealing with a left hamstring injury. Both players will undergo further tests to determine the severity.

The injury to Raúl García is the most concerning. A sprained knee means that he damaged the ligaments and the concern is that is could be something serious. He was in serious pain as he came to the sidelines and the club is hoping that tests will reveal good news. For Balenziaga, hamstring strains are difficult to gauge and could force players to miss anywhere from one week to over a month depending on the severity. His availability will be determined by how quickly his body responds to treatment.

Both players look set to miss Athletic’s Copa del Rey match against Huesca on Wednesday and the La Liga game against Levante on Monday night. Eduardo Berizzo will have to make some difficult decisions as to what to do with the team, especially considering that Yuri Berchiche is still suspended for two more league games. Most importantly, the hope is that neither player has suffered a serious injury and will be able to return quickly and healthy.
