Eduardo Berizzo “The Time Has Come For Us To Show What We’re Made Of”
After a two week international break Athletic will finally be back in action on Sunday. The Lions will host Getafe at the San Mamés and will be looking to earn just their second victory of the season and start climbing out of the relegation zone. On Saturday Eduardo Berizzo gave his pregame press conference and said it’s time for the team to take care of business.
“The time has come for us to show what we’re made of. We have to take care of the small details of the game and go out to win. My idea is to play the best we can with those who believe in the system. Tomorrow’s game will require us to play football well and seize every opportunity that comes. We are coming into a game where we must generate chances and score goals. We must be effective in those areas. Tomorrow the fans will be with the team and that makes the San Mamés a different and wonderful place.”
Berizzo wants to see a balanced match from the Lions. He said that they recognized the mistakes they made against Atlético Madrid and have to make sure those same issues don’t happen again.
“You have to always play with your heart and your head. We need to win and we will do that with good football. At the Wanda Metropolitano we lost because we allowed them to score two goals from set pieces. You have to recognizes errors and not repeat them. Balance is the best definition of playing good football.”
With Yuri Berchiche suspended Cristian Ganea was called up for the first time this season. Berizzo once again made it clear that every player must be ready for their opportunity and praised Ganea for his versatility and dedication in training every single day.
“I always emphasize that there are times when footballers must step forward. Everyone is ready to seize their opportunity. Everyone plays at it suits the team. The bench should be integrated by players who offer solutions in more than one position. Ganea is a young footballer who is still growing. I imagine him in two specific positions. He’s versatile and I called him for this game because he’s worked hard and always shown commitment.”
Despite the poor results this season the players have openly supported Berizzo, which is something the manager is very thankful for. He took the time to share his thoughts on the importance of working hard and putting yourself in everything you do, including coaching.
“I thank the players for their commitment they have to the team. It’s a personal satisfaction knowing that the team believes in you. I put a lot of myself in my work, my coaching, and into the players too. I believe in doing everything with rigor and conviction because that makes what you do honest and good. In football this behavior is rewarded. Iker Muniain’s renewal has been a great gesture of commitment to Athletic.”
Sunday’s game presents Athletic with the opportunity to restart their season and begin climbing the La Liga table. It won’t be easy, but they will have the support of the fans at the San Mamés and must be at their best if they are going to take all three points. The Zurigorri have had two weeks to prepare for this fixture and there will be no excuses if they do not put in a strong performance at home.
