Markel Susaeta “There Is No More Margin For Error”
Sunday’s match against Getafe is already being called a final by some Athletic fans. The club is currently in the relegation zone and in need of a win to start climbing the La Liga table. On Friday night Markel Susaeta was a guest on the Fuera de Juego radio show and said that this weekend’s game at the San Mamés is an opportunity that they can’t waste.
“The match against Getafe is vital. We have a great opportunity and we can’t miss out on any more. There is no more margin for error. We have to start adding points three by three. It’s not a final, but it is a vital game and we have to give our best from the first minute until the last. We are playing for our lives and we can’t fail anymore. We want the season to start taking shape this Sunday.
Despite the poor results Susaeta says that the team is in full support of manager Eduardo Berizzo. He doesn’t believe that Athletic have played to their potential and admits that the minor details of games have been the difference makers so far this season.
“The little details are the ones that are killing us. The team is with Berizzo until the death and he’s also with us. We will go to the death with his approach and way of playing football. We haven’t reached our potential and there is a lot of room for improvement. The previous years were not normal and just now we are starting to appreciate all the good things that we have done before.”
In closing, the 30-year-old stated that he is calm about his renewal and wants to continue at Athletic. Once something is finalized it will be announced. He also praised teammate Iker Muniain who recently signed a new deal that doesn’t contain a release clause.
“I’m very calm about my renewal. I owe everything to this club. I’m happy and comfortable here so where there is something new we will announce it. Muniain’s contract is something new. Let’s hope that is serves as a precedent for those who want to stay forever. It’s good new for everyone that Iker will still be here for many years. Everyone does what they think is best. The act of Iker is a way to thank the club and show how happy he is here.”
Sunday’s match will be a special day for Susaeta. If the Captain plays it will be his 494th appearance for Athletic, tying Piru Gainza for 5th all-time in club history. The milestone will be even more special if the Zurigorri are able to take all three points in front of their own fans. They are running out of time to turn the season around and will need to be at their best to beat Getafe.
