Athletic Club Targets Ibai Gómez And Fernando Llorente Wanted By Leeds Manager Marcelo Bielsa
The January transfer window is quickly approaching and Athletic Club may be in the market for players who can strengthen the team. Ibai Gómez has been one of the most exciting players in La Liga since leaving the Lions to sign with Alavés back in 2016 and is back in the orbit of Athletic. Meanwhile, Fernando Llorente is not enjoying life at Tottenham and could return to his boyhood club if broken relationships can be mended.
Both forwards are out of contract in June and could be on the move in January. Alavés would love to keep Gómez, but so far there have been no renewal talks, while Llorente has openly stated that he would like to return to Spain. It wouldn’t be surprising to see either return to the San Mamés, in the winter window or after their contracts expire in June, especially Gómez who has always been outspoken about his love for Athletic.
Unsurprisingly, Athletic aren’t the only club interested in the pair. Leeds United, who are currently coached by former Athletic manager Marcelo Bielsa, have also turned their attention to the Basque forwards. According to reports in England, Leeds will try to sign the two former Lions in January with sources saying that they could both cost somewhere in the €5 million range.
At this point it is hard to predict what will happen. Gómez has been quite vocal on social media, stating that he wants to finish the season at Alavés before making a decision on his future, and Llorente seems to want to return to Spain. However, the chance to play for Marcelo Bielsa once again could be enticing. One thing is clear – if Athletic are serious about signing either player they will have competition with Leeds, Real Sociedad, and Celta Vigo all showing interest.
