Iker Muniain has signed a contract renewal with Athletic Club through 2024 (AC)

Iker Muniain is already an Athletic legend at the age of 25 years old. After breaking into the first team back in 2009, at just 16 years old, he has gone on to feature in 359 games and is now a Captain. The Lezama product has established himself as one of the most important players at the club, both on and off the field, and has now secured his future at the San Mamés.

On Wednesday Athletic officially announced that Iker Muniain has signed a contract extension through 2024. His new deal does not contain a release clause and also makes him one of the highest paid players in the squad. Muniain’s previous deal was set to expire in June and several clubs across Europe had expressed interest in singing the midfielder. However, he refused to listen to the offers and was only focused on staying at Athletic.

“I am very happy to renew my contract and remain linked to the club where I have always wanted to be”, said the midfielder after signing his contract at Ibaigane. Muniain will address the media tomorrow, Thursday, immediately following the morning training session at Lezama. Not having a release clause included in the contract is a unique situation which shows Muniain’s commitment to the club. If for some reason he ever did decide to leave, a judge would be tasked with determining his value, but that is not expected to ever be a situation with Iker Muniain.

He has always been outspoken about his love for Athletic and his desire for the best players to stay at the club despite attracting interest from other teams. The 25-year-old has several tattoos on his body celebrating the Zurigorri and is well on his one to becoming one of the best players in the history of the club. With his new contract in place Muniain can focus on helping the team achieve success this season and fans will certainly be ready to applaud the star during Sunday’s La Liga match against Getafe at the San Mamés
