Iñigo Martinez Leaves Training Early With Thigh Discomfort, Yeray Begins Next Stage Of Recovery
Iñigo Martinez has returned from international duty with Spain is currently preparing with his Athletic Club teammates for Sunday’s match against Getafe. Unfortunately, the defender was forced to leave training early on Tuesday after dealing with some discomfort in his right thigh. He was seen stretching with trainers at the Lezama facilities and was pulled out of the session out of precaution.
At this point it doesn’t appear as though he has suffered a serious injury, but was simply removed to protect him with Sunday’s game in mind. Martinez has already dealt with two separate muscle injuries already this season and the club is looking to be cautious with similar issues moving forward.
On a positive note, Yeray took another big step forward in his recovery from a groin strain. The 23-year-old has continued to train apart from the group, but was able to join his teammates for rondos on Tuesday. That was the only drill he was allowed to participate in, however it’s a really good sign that he should be able to return to action very soon.
Mikel Rico is still nursing a bruised ankle that he suffered against Deportivo in last week’s Trofeo Teresa Herrera, although he is hopeful that he will be cleared in time to play this weekend. The midfielder has enjoyed regular minutes as of late and wants to continue playing an important role in Eduardo Berizzo’s team. With the Lions currently battling the relegation zone they could really use a big win on Sunday and the team is preparing for a big night at the San Mamés.
