Iker Muniain Will Reportedly Sign Contract Extension With Athletic Club Before The End Of The Month
Athletic Club’s Presidential elections will take place in late December but there are still some issues that need to be attended to before then. Several players are currently in the final year of their contracts and are in need of renewals, but none are as pressing of a matter than Iker Muniain. The two sides have been negotiating for a few weeks now and appear to have finally come to an agreement.
According to breaking reports from Onda Vasco and El Desmarque Bizkaia, Iker Muniain and the club have reached an agreement on a new contract that will be officially signed before the end of the month. The legal team only needs to file some of the minor details and put the deal on paper, but the 25-year-old star will be committing his future to his boyhood club.
Muniain signed his last extension back in 2015 which made him one of the highest paid players in the team and included a €45 million release clause. Since then players like Iñaki Williams have been given lucrative deals and signings like Iñigo Martinez and Yuri Berchiche have made Muniain’s wages a bit outdated. His new contract will see him jump back into the top paid players in the team and will likely include a much higher release clause. Due to the wonderful relationship between the player and the club, negotiations have been handled with ease as both knew Muniain’s desire to stay at Athletic.
The Lezama product has always been outspoken about his love for Athletic and desire for the best players to remain at the club despite attracting the attention from other teams. Clubs from Italy, England, and even some in Spain have shown interest in Muniain over the last few weeks but it was all ignored. The midfielder, who has already featured in 359 games for Athletic, was only focused on continuing his career at the San Mamés and will be signing his new contract very soon.
