Unai Vencedor Set To Sign Contract Extension With Athletic Club
Unai Vencedor may be the most promising young player at Athletic. Since joining Lezama from Santutxu in 2017 the midfielder has constantly turned heads and was an absolute star with the Juvenil A team last year. Over the summer he was officially promoted to Bilbao Athletic, skipping CD Basconia, and has continued to impress. He’s started all 13 games so far this season and has been one of the best players in the league despite just turning 18 years old a few days ago.
The teenager has played with maturity well beyond his years and has shown signs that he could become a sensational player for the first team. He controls the center of the field and the pace of play, reads the game very well, and is capable of cutting defenses open with phenomenal passes. His game is very similar to that of Sergio Busquets as he balances positional intelligence with physicality, while also being the anchor in the midfield and contributing to the attack.
Back in October it was reported that Vencedor had caught the eye of several clubs in England with one already willing to pay his release clause, which is currently less than €2 million. Athletic had no intentions of letting the starlet leave and were already working on a new contract. Both the player and club wanted to reach an agreement and it now looks like that has happened.
According to an exclusive report from Javier Beltrán of El Correo, Unai Vencedor is about to sign a new contract that will guarantee his future at the San Mamés. The new deal will reportedly run four years and will also contain a €40 million release clause. The player’s wages will also be significantly improved and it seems certain that he will spend next summer training with the first team.
Despite the interest from clubs in England, Beltrán says that Vencedor never entertained the idea of leaving Athletic and wants to thrive at the club. He has been more focused on his playing career than money and is enjoying life with the Zurigorri. The midfielder knows that he will be given the chance to reach the first team very soon and realize his dream of playing at the San Mamés. The contract still has to be signed, but Vencedor’s decision to stay at Athletic is a massive victory for the club.
