Lezama Weekend Recap: Youth Teams Struggle With Difficult Road Games
Bilbao Athletic 2-2 Cultural Durango
Bilbao Athletic were in a difficult spot on Sunday as they welcomed Cultural Durango to Lezama. Athletic’s U23 team had just played Norwich City four days prior and Gaizka Garitano was forced to keep key players like Iñigo Vicente and Gaizka Larrazabal on the bench to start the game. Despite creating several chances the Katxorros found themselves down 2-0 at the hour mark after giving up two penalty kicks. Victor San Bartolomé and Asier Villalibre then scored two late goals to rescue a valuable point. On Sunday the team will travel to Barakaldo with hopes of making up some ground in the table as they are currently five points off the promotional playoff zone.
San Pedro 2-1 CD Basconia
After going seven straight games without defeat CD Basconia were finally beaten on Saturday. They traveled to take on San Pedro and found themselves down 1-0 after just eight minutes. The Basauritarras finally responded in the 79th minute with a goal from Oier Zarraga and looked set for a draw. However, San Pedro took the lead back just four minutes later as they won the match 2-1. Basconia are currently 12th in the table and will host Zamudio on Saturday.
Pamplona 2-0 Athletic Juvenil A
The struggles continued for Athletic’s Juvenil A team who fell 2-0 to Pamplona on the road over the weekend. It was the team’s 4th loss of the season and third straight game without a victory. After picking up just one point over the last three weeks they occupy 10th place in the league table and will host Amorebieta on Sunday at Lezama.
Athletic Juvenil B 4-2 Vasconia
Athletic’s Juvenil B team shook off last weekend’s loss to Arenas with an impressive performance at Lezama on Saturday. Nico Serrano scored a brace and Nico Williams added another goal as they defeated Vasconia 4-2. They are now two points off of the top of the league table and will travel to take on Tolosa on Sunday.
Lakua 1-0 Athletic Cadete A
Saturday saw Athletic’s Cadete A team lose their third straight game as they fell 1-0 to Lakua. The defeat was their fourth of the season and the first time they’ve been held without a goal all year. This poor run of form has seen the Katxorros drop to 7th and are now 11 points off the top spot in the table. Jon Solaun’s side will be looking to pick up important points on Sunday when they host Vasconia at Lezama.
Sestao River 0-0 Athletic Cadete B
Athletic’s Cadete B team are still undefeated but faced a tough test on the road against Sestao River over the weekend. There were chances for both teams to win yet the match ended in a scoreless draw which was a fair result. Athletic currently hold a two point lead at the top of the league table and will have the chance to build on that on Sunday when they host Lekeitio at Lezama.
Barakaldo 0-5 Athletic Infantil A
Seven games into the season and Athletic’s Infantil A team continue to dominate their competition, winning every match so far. Over the weekend they defeated Barakaldo 5-0 on the road and are running away from the rest of the league at the top of the table. On Sunday they will host second place Loiola Indautxu who they beat 9-1 earlier in the year.
Gernika 2-3 Athletic Infantil B
San Mamés 2006 bounced back from two consecutive losses with a hard fought win over the weekend. They were able to pull off a 3-2 win over Gernika on the road and are now six points off the top of the table. On Saturday they will face another difficult opponent as they travel to Gatika. Athletic’s Infantil B team won the first meeting 2-1 earlier this season at Lezama.
Athletic Infantil C 4-2 Amorebieta
Alirón 2006 made it three straight wins on Saturday when they beat Amorebieta 4-2 at Lezama in what was a thrilling match. They have scored 10 goals over that span, conceding just twice, and are in a battle for the top spot in the table with Retuerto Sport. The team will travel to Bermeo on Saturday as they look to continue their winning streak. Athletic won the first meeting 3-1 at Lezama earlier this season.
Athletic Alevin A 7-1 Galdakao
After losing their first game of the season last weekend, San Mamés 2007 got things back on track as they defeated Galdakao 7-1 at Lezama. The team still trails Santutxu at the top of the table and will have the chance to make up ground on Saturday when they host Lemoa Harrobi at Lezama. The two sides played to a 1-1 draw in the first match of the season.
Arenas 3-1 Athletic Alevin B
Alirón 2007 suffered their fourth straight defeat over the weekend in a 3-1 loss on the road against Arenas Club. They are now 9 points off the top of the table but will have the perfect opportunity to improve their position on Saturday when they travel to take on league leaders Santutxu. Athletic won the first meeting earlier this season 8-1.
Somorrostro 4-4 Athletic Alevin C
San Mamés 2008 have now gone three games unbeaten since opening their season with a loss. On Saturday they hit the road for a difficult match against Somorrostro which ended in a thrilling 4-4 draw. They will be back at Lezama on Saturday as they host Zalla.
Athletic Alevin D 11-3 Portugalete
Athletic’s Alevin D team secured their fourth win of the season in as many games after beating Portugalete 11-3 at Lezama over the weekend. Alirón 2008 have scored 38 goals so far this year, conceding just six times, and stand alone at the top of the table. They will travel to Gaztelueta on Saturday with hopes of continuing their perfect run.
Athletic Alevin E 6-5 Barrika
Athletic’s Alevin E team faced their toughest challenge of the season over the weekend and were able to defeat Barrika 6-5 at Lezama. The Katxorros are still perfect after four games and occupy the top spot in the league table. On Saturday they will travel to take on Mungia who have yet to win a game.
