Eduardo Berizzo Gives The Green Light For Athletic Club To Sign Ibai Gómez
Things have changed quite a bit since Ibai Gómez left Athletic Club back in the summer of 2016. At the time the winger had just recovered from a knee injury that kept him sidelined for most of the season and was allowed to leave for free. Gómez joined Alavés where he has since rediscovered his best football and has quickly become one of the most dangerous attackers in La Liga.
Over the past few months there have been constant reports linking the 29-year-old with a return to Athletic. He has always been outspoken about his love for the club and his current contract with Alavés is set to expire in June. So far there have been no conversations about an extension and the belief is that Gómez will be making a move in the summer. He will be free to talk to other teams starting in January and Athletic are ready to pounce.
According to a breaking report from Javier Ortiz de Lazcano of El Correo, Eduardo Berizzo has given the green light for the club to pursue the signing of Ibai Gómez. At this point Athletic are debating whether to try to sign the winger in the winter transfer window or wait until he is free in the summer after his contract runs out. It’s no surprise that the Zurigorri want to bring Gómez back to the San Mamés, but they also aren’t the only club interested in the Santutxu product.
A new report from Deporte Campeón claims that Celta Vigo have also turned their attention to the winger. Apart from Athletic, Real Sociedad and a few clubs from England have expressed interest in the player so Celta Vigo are joining a very difficult race. Gómez has already scored three goals this season and it is very likely that other teams will also emerge as potential suitors heading into the winter transfer window.
There have been several reports claiming that Ibai Gómez has already made the decision to return to Athletic which has angered the Alavés star. He recently took to social media where he stated “When the time comes for something to happen, I will face it and be honest like I have always been”. It wouldn’t be surprising at all to see Gómez back at the San Mamés, but he has not liked seeing stories claiming that he has already made a decision. Right now he is focused on Alavés and will decide his future when the time comes, but it’s clear that Athletic will have plenty of competition to sign the winger.
