Yuri Berchiche Suspended For 3 Games After Altercation With Referee
Athletic Club’s 3-2 loss against Atlético Madrid was disappointing in more ways than one. Not only did the Lions blow two separate leads to come away with no points, left-back Yuri Berchiche was also involved with an altercation with referee Sánchez Martínez after the game was over. The 28-year-old was shown a yellow card followed by a straight red and will now serve suspension.
Berchiche was guaranteed to miss at least two games – one for his fifth yellow card of the season and another for the red. However, he could have missed a total of four matches due to the nature of the incident. On Wednesday the league finally handed out their punishment which came in the form of a three game suspension.
As expected, Berchiche will still miss one game for his fifth yellow but was given a two-match ban for the incident and circumstance that led to the red card. The referee published in his post-game notes that Berchiche was ejected for approaching him “aggressively and having to be held back and pulled away by his own teammates”.
Being without Yuri Berchiche leaves Athletic with a serious problem. The €24 million signing is the only player in the squad who has played every single minute so far this season. He has been an integral part of Eduardo Berizzo’s team and now Mikel Balenziaga will likely be the one to take his place. Athletic will now have the entire international break to prepare for their upcoming games without Berchiche and there will be no excuses for not securing a win against Getafe on 25 November at the San Mamés.
