Yeray’s Recovery Is Ahead Of Schedule
Yeray has quietly been one of the best center-backs in all of La Liga this season. He’s had the full trust of manager Eduardo Berizzo and has been a reliable rock in Athletic’s back line during what has been a disappointing season. During last week’s match against Espanyol he was forced to leave the game injured early in the first half and tests confirmed that he had suffered a Grade I-II groin strain.
Initial diagnosis stated that Yeray would miss roughly one month of action before being able to get back on the field. However, the defender has other plans. On Monday he was able to begin running with trainer Xabier Clemente and has since started working with the ball at his feet. At this point Yeray’s recovery is ahead of schedule and the plan is for him to join his teammates in some capacity starting next week.
Athletic will be back in action after the international break when they host Getafe at the San Mamés on 25 November. Even if he is cleared to play Yeray he likely won’t participate due to the chances of re-injury, but he could be back on the field a few days later when Athletic host Huesca in the first leg of their Copa del Rey draw. In the meantime, it’s certainly encouraging that Yeray is already ahead of schedule and the important thing is that he returns fully healthy.
