Athletic Club’s U23 team traveled to England on Wednesday to participate in their second group stage game of the Premier League International Cup. After falling 4-0 to Wolfsburg at Lezama back in September the Katxorros were in need of a positive result against Norwich City. Several talented young players were called up for the match and stepped up in a big way.

Asier Villalibre, Gaizka Larrazabal, and Iñigo Vicente all had chances to open up the scoring but Norwich’s defense stood their ground. It wasn’t until the 29th minute that Athletic were finally able to break through when Villalibre’s shot beat the keeper in the low corner. The Zurigorri didn’t stop there. Oier Zarraga had a chance to double the lead a few minutes later but put his effort just wide of the goal.

The Katxorros carried the 1-0 lead into the break but were pressing for more in the second half. Villalibre quickly scored his second goal of the night in the 47th minute, capitalizing on two rebounded shots from Antonio Salado and Jon Rojo. With just 15 minutes left to play Rojo would make it 3-0 after finishing off a loose ball inside the box.

Norwich continued to send men forward looking for a way to get back into the game, but were unsuccessful. The final whistle blew with Athletic having won 3-0 and picking up their first victory of the tournament at Carrow Road. The Basques will play their final match of the group stage against Tottenham on 23 January as they try to advance to the next stage of the Premier League International Cup.
