Mikel Rico Injured In Friendly Win Over Deportivo, Iñigo Lekue Makes Season Debut
Athletic Club won the Trofeo Teresa Herrera on Wednesday after beating Deportivo 4-1 in a penalty shootout, but there were other important storylines as well. Several players like Cristian Ganea, Ander Iturraspe, Gorka Guruzeta, and Iñigo Córdoba all got to play valuable minutes in the victory with Córdoba and Aritz Aduriz both scoring impressive goals. However, there was an unfortunate injury in the first half.
After just half an hour of play Mikel Rico had to leave the game. The midfielder suffered a blow to his left foot and tried to continue, but was unable to after receiving medical attention. The club quickly announced that Rico sustained a blow to the side of his ankle and manager Eduardo Berizzo revealed that it was an aggravation of an older injury. The hope is that it isn’t anything serious but the 34-year-old will undergo further tests.
On a separate note, it was a special night for Iñigo Lekue who came on in the 81st minute to make his season debut. The right-back fractured his ankle before the season began and recently received the medical clearance needed to return to the field. He looked energetic and fully recovered against Deportivo. With a busy fixture list over the next few weeks Lekue may be back in the squad for an official match very soon.
Athletic will now have the rest of the international break to prepare for their upcoming La Liga match against Getafe. The fixture will take place at the San Mamés on 25 November and fans will accept nothing less than a strong performance at home.
