Eduardo Berizzo Doesn’t See Upcoming Game Against Getafe As A Final
Athletic Club defeated Deportivo 4-1 in a penalty shootout on Wednesday to win the Trofeo Teresa Herrera in A Coruña. After the game manager Eduardo Berizzo said that he was happy with the way his team performed, even though the second half wasn’t as organized due to making several substitutions.
“A joy never hurts. We were more organized in the first half, more compact. In the second half the rhythm was lost as a result of making so many changes. Iker [Muniain] could not play and then Rico was injured. He had a blow to the bone in his foot. It’s an old injury and the blow re-aggravated it. Let’s hope it’s nothing. We leave happy after the way we competed.”
Several players had to operate out of position against Deportivo, but Berizzo believes that everyone made the most of their minutes. The manager was especially happy with the performance of Ander Iturraspe who he said is an option to fill in at center-back if needed.
“Yuri played as an emergency center-back because we wanted to see Ganea in his natural position. It was important for Iturraspe to play in defense today because we had an overbooking of midfielders and he did well. He knows the responsibilities of a center-back since it’s a position where he has already played before. He can play in both positions, just like Peru [Nolaskoain].”
Looking ahead to Athletic’s next La Liga match, Berizzo said that he doesn’t believe that it should be viewed as final. The Basques will be looking to take all three points against Getafe at the San Mamés on 25 November and to do that they will have to play an organized match.
“We wanted to finish this match with better sensations than we started with. Everyone played close to their best level. I also want to congratulate to women’s team for their victory. I would say that our next game is very important and we will have to play in a balanced way. Saying that it’s a final is false. That’s a grandiose statement. There are three points at home that we will be playing for and we need them to improve our position in the table. We have to repeat the things we did well in the previous game.”
Athletic Club currently sit 17th in the La Liga table and have only secured one win all season. The players and coach have remained confident that they will turn things around and will need to make the most of the international break to prepare for their upcoming game against Getafe.
