Aritz Aduriz scored his first goal of the season on Wednesday, although it did come in a friendly match. Athletic defeated Deportivo 4-1 on penalties to win the Trofeo Teresa Herrera and the striker was critical of the performance after letting their opponents tie the game twice. He told reporters that it’s been difficult to find his rhythm after missing time with injuries and but now he’s ready to help the team turn their season around.

“We can’t be happy at all when we have gone ahead twice and then let them come back. There are things to improve and we have to be aware that we are not playing as well as we would like. Today is a clear reflection that we have many things to improve. I had a long time off with the injury at the beginning of the season and in the end it was hard for me to get started. I’m trying to help the team earn points so it’s necessary to play well.”

Despite the disappointing results to far this season, Aduriz says that the team will continue to work hard. He believes that Athletic will be able to secure more points in the matches ahead.

“We will continue working as always, this team never gives up. When things don’t go well for so long there are a lot of things that are missing. We have not been decisive, created enough clear chances, or controlled matches, and have given up too many goals. We are confident that the team will be better and that positive results will come.”

Athletic Club will be back in action on 25 November when they host Getafe at the San Mamés. With the Zurigorri currently 17th in the La Liga table they need to secure all three points at home and will have the rest of the international break to prepare for the fixture.
