Racing 3-1 Bilbao Athletic: Late Goals Down Katxorros At El Sardinero
Bilbao Athletic finally got back to their winning ways last weekend. The Katxorros had gone five straight games without a victory before dominating Izarra 6-0 at Lezama. On Sunday they looked to build on their momentum, but knew that it would be a tough test on the road against league leaders Racing at El Sardinero. As expected, it took until the final minutes to determine a winner.
It was an even match from the start until Bilbao Athletic finally opened up the scoring. Gaizka Larrazabal was able to beat his man on the wing in the 39th minute and sent in a cross that found Asier Villalibre. The striker finished off the goal to give his team the 1-0 lead which they would carry into the halftime break. Racing were urged on by their fans and would quickly respond.
Aitor Buñuel pulled the match level in the 55th minute after a beautiful attack down the right wing and from there things really began to open up. Both teams clearly wanted to keep possession and attack, but Racing looked more dangerous when on the ball. With only 10 minutes left to play it appeared as though the game was heading for a draw. Taking away one point would have still been a good result for the Katxorros, but their hosts had other plans.
In the 84th minute Sergio Ruiz finished off a pass from Buñuel to take the lead and five minutes later Racing would be awarded a penalty. Quique Rivero stepped up and calmly beat Hodei Oleaga to make it a 3-1 win for Los Verdiblancos. Bilbao Athletic now find themselves in the middle of the table, but still close to the promotional playoff zone. They will host struggling Cultural Durango in just one week as they look to pick up three important points at Lezama.
