Yuri Berchiche Ejected After Loss To Atlético Madrid, Faces Two Game Suspension
Athletic were not happy after the end of Saturday’s match against Atlético Madrid. The Lions had led twice during the game but saw their hosts score two late goals to win 3-2 in stoppage time. In a dramatic end to the game, Unai Nuñez was called for a questionable foul on Diego Godin which led to the winning goal. After the final whistle Yuri Berchiche let his frustration get the best of him.
The defender was sent off for continuing to argue with the referee despite having some of his teammates try to pull him away. Sánchez Martínez had to explain the situation in his post-game notes and had the following to say about the ejection.
“In the 90th minute the player, Berchiche (12), was ejected for the following reason: After being reprimanded at the end of the game and still continuing on the pitch, the said player was ejected for facing me aggressively and having to be held back and pulled away by his own teammates”
Berchiche was given a yellow card, his fifth of the season, before eventually being shown a red card for continuing to argue. He will now be suspended for one game for having five yellow cards and will have to serve a second match suspension because of the red card. There is also a chance that La Liga could hand him an even longer suspension due to the nature of the situation, but that remains to be seen. If the bookings are upheld he will miss the upcoming fixtures against Getafe and Levante.
