Unai Nuñez Unhappy With Foul Call That Led To Atlético Madrid’s Winning Goal
Unai Nuñez started in place of injured Yeray on Saturday as Athletic Club faced off with Atlético Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano. The 21-year-old put in a fantastic performance, but was called for a late foul on Diego Godin that led to the game winning goal. Afterwards Nuñez was critical of the call and said that the Lions deserved all three points.
“It was a very unfair finish. We played a great game after suffering through the first fifteen minutes. We deserved the three points, they didn’t even deserve a draw. The third goal came from a foul on Godin that wasn’t a foul. For them to have a set piece like that is almost as good as a penalty for other teams. This was a game where we can all go home happy with our performance despite the defeat. We’re all working at the highest level even if it’s not reflected in the results.”
Nuñez recognizes that there is plenty of room for improvement, but believes that positive results are just around the corner. Despite not playing regular minutes this season, the defender is focussed on getting better every day and said that the team took a step forward on Saturday.
“Being this far down the table scares anyone, but we are still at the beginning of the season so to speak. There is a lot of room for improvement. We are improving and have taken two steps forward despite the defeat. The results have to come. We trust that they will and we will continue to strive for improvement. We are identified by our humility and hard work. Although I haven’t been playing regularly I have tried to improve.”
The international break is now underway for Athletic who will play their next game on 25 November when they host Getafe at the San Mamés. At this point Yeray is still recovering from a groin strain which means that Nuñez may keep his place in the starting lineup. Regardless, the Lions now have two weeks to prepare for the match and fans will be demanding nothing less than a strong performance at home.
