Iñaki Williams “We Played An Almost Perfect Game And Deserved Much More”
Athletic have now gone 11 straight games without a win after falling 3-2 to Atlético Madrid on Saturday. The Lions had the lead twice during the match, but two late goals from Atleti saw the Basques go home empty handed. After the game Iñaki Williams was clearly upset at the result, saying that Athletic deserved all three points because they played a fantastic game.
“It’s quite unfair. They didn’t even deserve a draw. We played a great game. We were very good and didn’t allow them to create chances, but we lost because of small moments and an unfair foul. It hurts and it hurts me because we had three points in our hands and are going home with nothing. We are living in a hard time and right now everything looks bad.”
Despite the loss, Iñaki believes that Athletic can improve their position in the La Liga table if they continue to play the way they did against Atlético. He was happy to score two goals, but knows that it really doesn’t mean anything because the team weren’t able to pick up any points in Madrid.
“Playing like this is our way forward. We have to be proud with how we played and know that this effort is going to bring more points. We played an almost perfect game. We did a lot of things well and the team deserved much more. I’m happy that I scored goals, but at the same time I’m unhappy with the result because silly mistakes cost us. Football hasn’t been fair to us.”
The international break will now start for Athletic who will have some much-needed time to reflect and work on ways to improve. Iñaki Williams and Athletic Club will be back in action on 25 November when they host Getafe at the San Mamés. With two weeks to rest and prepare, this game will already be seen as a must win match for the Basques.
