Yeray Diagnosed With Grade I-II Muscle Strain, Expected To Miss One Month
Going into last week Athletic had a completely healthy squad for the first time all season. Beñat had recovered from his sickness and Iñigo Lekue was back in training after suffering a fractured ankle in late August. Eduardo Berizzo had the entire team to choose from but that didn’t last very long with Yeray picking up a muscle injury in the 1-0 loss to Espanyol on Monday night.
On Tuesday Athletic officially announced that further tests were performed and that Yeray has been diagnosed with a Grade I-II adductor muscle strain in his left leg. The 23-year-old is expected to miss around one month of action and will be targeting a return on 9 December against Girona. He will begin rehabilitation as quickly as possible, but for now he will have to rest.
Yeray has quietly been one of the best defenders in La Liga this season and his absence will be a serious blow for Athletic. In the meantime, this will give Unai Nuñez and Peru Nolaskoain the opportunity to enjoy more playing time and battle for more important roles in the team. Athletic will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to face Atlético Madrid. Along with Yeray, the Lions will also be without Dani García who is suspended, while Raúl García could also be unavailable as he nurses a sprained left ankle.
