Eduardo Berizzo “The Solution Isn’t Magical, We Have To Keep Working”
Athletic’s disappointing start to the season hasn’t gotten any better and Monday night the troubles continued as the Lions fell 1-0 to Espanyol. Eduardo Berizzo’s team now find themselves just one point clear of the relegation zone as the head into Saturday’s match against Atlético Madrid. After the loss Toto was asked if he thinks his side have the ability to turn things around and he showed confidence in his players, although he is aware that improvement won’t happen magically.
“Yes, we absolutely do. I fear for my position just like you fear for yours. I would love to say that we can magically start winning games, but we are worried because we want to reverse the situation. I don’t like that the effort hasn’t brought results. Mental toughness is indispensable. The solution isn’t magical, we have to keep working. The situation is uncomfortable but every seven days we have the opportunity to improve our place in the standings.”
Berizzo would go on to admit that Athletic must be aware of the situation that they are in. As things stand right now they are in a battle against relegation and must work to start climbing higher up the table. He’s confident in the quality within the team, but that isn’t enough to win games at the moment.
“The reality is that we are far down the table and we must be aware of that and work to climb higher. We have enough quality to create chances and score goals. In attack we must generate better chances. When the quality doesn’t show you have to work harder and with more conviction. You have to be tough and recognize the situation with a calm analysis as you search for a victory.”
Athletic will be back in action on Saturday when the Lions will travel to the Wanda Metropolitano to take on Atlético Madrid. Berizzo will be without Dani García who is suspended for the match and could also have to replace Yeray and Raúl García who suffered injuries against Espanyol. It will certainly be a difficult match for the Basques who are desperate for a victory and being without three key players would make it even more complicated.
