Athletic Club Starlet Ruben Azcona Is Starting To Become A Difference Maker For CD Basconia

There were high expectations surrounding CD Basconia to start the season. After last year’s poor campaign Aritz Solabarrieta was promoted to manager and brought with him several players from the Juvenil A team that he had previously coached. The excitement was understandable, but it took the feeder club a while to really adjust to all the changes and find their rhythm.

They drew the first game of the season and then went on a five game losing streak that looked quite worrying. The defense was playing well enough, but the team was struggling to create chances and lacked reliable finishing in front of goal. Things began to change at the end of September when they finally secured another draw, playing Ordizia to a 2-2 finish on the road. Since then Basconia have picked up three wins and two draws over the last five games and seem to have turned a corner in their season.

It’s important to note that the clear improvement has come about due to several different things. To begin with, Solabarrieta has made adjustments to the system which has allowed for attackers to be more creative while also not hurting the defensive consistency. The team has addressed weaknesses that were exploited and have generally worked hard to be better. That being said, several players have stepped up in a major way and Ruben Azcona is one of them.

The 17-year-old struggled to start the season, like most of his teammates, as he made the adjustment from youth football to being a professional. So many players have had to learn how to function in a more physical and demanding league and as each one has found their rhythm the team as a whole has improved. Over the past few matches Azcona has been a real difference maker on the field and that can’t be ignored.

He is currently tied with Youssouf Diarra with four goals so far this season and more are expected. The striker has found the back of the net three times over the past two matches and is also doing other things to cause problems for opponents. His passing and off the ball work has been much better as of late and it’s paying off in a big way. For a young forward that has caused so much excitement over the last few years it’s certainly been great to see Azcona start to play his best with Basconia.

Big things are expected from Ruben Azcona who shattered Lezama scoring records at several different age levels. He’s always excelled at positioning and finishing chances but playing with Basconia is a new test. The 17-year-old is a professional footballer now and is taking the necessary steps towards joining Bilbao Athletic in the near future. His future at Athletic looks bright, but for now the most important thing is continued development at Basconia and helping the feeder club climb their league table in the weeks to come.

Azcona isn’t the only one playing at a high level right now. Others such as Youssouf Diarra, Ewan Urain, Juan Artola, Jon Cabo, Gorka Estrada, Aitor Paredes, Álvaro Núñez, and Imanol García de Albéniz all seem to have found their footing in Spain’s Tercera. This generation – which also included the likes Oihan Sancet, Unai Vencedor, and Asier Córdoba – is truly something special. They have all shown the potential to one day challenge for a place in the first team and fans should be excited to see CD Basconia playing at a higher level in recent weeks.
