Iker Muniain Has No Desire To Leave Athletic Despite Interest From Other Clubs
Iker Muniain has become one of Athletic’s most important players and is a leader both on and off the field. His current contract is set to expire at the end of the season and his representatives have already been in renewal negotiations with the club for a few weeks now. With that being the case, several other clubs have set their sights on the 25-year-old as a possible transfer target.
It’s already been reported that both Liverpool and Napoli have submitted contract offers to Muniain who will be free to negotiate with other teams in January if he hasn’t signed a renewal with Athletic by then. At the same time, Roma and Lazio have also been monitoring the situation of the midfielder who has scored four goals so far this season. Despite the interest, Iker Muniain isn’t planning on leaving Athletic.
According to an exclusive report from Javier Beltran of AS, Muniain is only thinking about staying at Athletic and is hoping to finalize his contract renewal as soon as possible. A new deal would see the 25-year-old become one of the highest paid players in the squad which is exactly what happened when he renewed back in 2015. The Lezama product has always felt loved and valued by the club and fans, especially after suffering two torn ACLs, and isn’t even entertaining the thought of leaving the San Mamés.
Throughout his career Iker Muniain has always been outspoken about his desire for top players to stay at Athletic instead of leaving for other clubs. He takes a lot of pride in playing for the Basque giants and even sports a tattoo of the 2015 Spanish Super Cup trophy which Athletic won by beating Barcelona. He also has a tattoo of his son wearing an Athletic shirt. Anything can happen in football but, based off of Muniain’s love for his boyhood club and many statements in the past, it is no surprise that he wants to continue his career at Athletic.
