Bilbao Athletic

Bilbao Athletic celebrate a goal against Izarra (MD)

After only being able to pick up one point over the last five matches, Bilbao Athletic were desperate to get back to their winning ways on Saturday. The Katxorros hosted Izarra at Lezama and manager Gaizka Garitano made a few changes to the lineup by starting Jesús Areso, Javi Murua, and Victor San Bartolomé. The team put six goals past their opponents, while also keeping a clean sheet, in what was a truly dominant performance.

The first goal came in the 8th minute thanks to a beautiful play from Gaizka Larrazabal. The winger was able to beat his man and sent in a low cross to San Bartolomé who blasted a shot past the keeper to give the Katxorros an early 1-0 lead. Three minutes later Areso would find San Bartolomé on the edge of the box and once again he struck the ball into the back of the net to double the lead.

Bilbao Athletic would create a few more chances throughout the first half with Larrazabal and Iñigo Vicente causing a lot of problems for the Izarra defenders. In the 40th minute a long throw in from Areso saw Peru Nolaskoain head the ball to Asier Villalibre who then headed the ball into the top corner to make it 3-0 before the two sides went into the break.

Gaizka Larrazabal Jon Rojo Celebrate

Gaizka Larrazabal scored a brace and gave an assist in Saturday’s 6-0 win (AS)

The second half began much like the first with Bilbao Athletic in complete control. Just one minute in Larrazabal was able to beat three defenders with exquisite dribbling as he made his way into the box. The winger then slotted his shot past the goalkeeper to make it 4-0 and the rout was on. Izarra started to send more players forward, but Dani Vivian, Javi Murua, and Unai Vencedor did well to force the ball out wide where Bilbao Athletic were able to limit their chances.

In the 83rd minute the Katxorros would get a quick counter attack with Vicente, Jurgi Oteo, and Larrazabal attacking two defenders the length of the field. Vicente slid the ball to Oteo in the box who then passed the ball across the face of the goal to Larrazabal who took advantage of the empty net and scored. Just before the final whistle Vicente would break away again, this time down the right wing, and cut the ball back onto his left foot. He played the ball to Villalibre who was racing into the box and calmly finished the chance to give the team a 6-0 lead and the victory.

Saturday’s game was the most complete performance from Bilbao Athletic in quite some time and saw the Katxorros pick up an important three points. Everyone played a stellar match with Vicente, Larrazabal, Villalibre, Vencedor, and San Bartolomé standing out as the most influential players on the field. The team will now turn their attention to next Sunday’s road game against Racing who entered the weekend at the top of the league table.
