Mikel Rico “The Responsibility Of Playing For Athletic Is Much Greater Than At Any Other Club”
Mikel Rico made his first start of the season last weekend as Athletic played Valencia to a scoreless draw at the San Mamés. The Basques have now gone nine straight games without a victory and will be looking to change that on Monday when they travel to take on Espanyol. Rico was recently a guest on Radio Bilbao de la Ser and said that the team isn’t worried, but they are aware of their situation.
“The responsibility of playing for Athletic, being from here, is much greater than the responsibility of being at another club. Being in this position weighs a little more here than other teams. We are aware that we are not in a good place in the table and that we haven’t been consistent. We know that we have to improve, but I wouldn’t use the word ‘Worry’.”
Looking ahead to the upcoming match, Rico kept his comments brief. He highlighted the fact that Espanyol have a strong squad and said that Athletic will have to play good football to get a positive result.
“Espanyol have a good coach. They’ve been doing well for a few years now and have good players. It does not surprise me that they are so high up the table. We will have to play a good game.”
For the first time all season, Eduardo Berizzo has had the entire squad available for training this week. With eight days between Athletic’s previous match against Valencia and Monday’s clash with Espanyol, the Lions should have plenty of time to prepare. The manager will be able to call up his strongest group of players as the Basques look to get their season back on the right track with a victory and three vital points.
