Liverpool And Napoli Have Reportedly Submitted Contract Offers To Athletic Club Star Iker Muniain
Iker Muniain has been one of Athletic’s best players since making his first team debut at just 16 years old. The Lezama product has always had a special ability with the ball at his feet and other clubs have taken notice. He’s struggled with knee injuries over the last few years, but now at 25 years old he’s become one of the leaders in the team. This season he has already scored four goals and it’s no surprise that he’s attracted the interest of others.
According to a report from Marca, Liverpool and Napoli have made contract offers to the midfielder in hopes of signing him next season. With Muniain’s contract set to expire in June the assumption is that these offers are for free transfers. There is no denying the talent that Muniain possesses and he has all the qualities to be successful in England or Italy, but leaving the San Mamés is unlikely.
Throughout his career Iker Muniain has always been outspoken about his desire for top players to stay at Athletic instead of leaving for other clubs. He takes a lot of pride in playing for the Basque giants and even sports a tattoo of the 2015 Spanish Super Cup trophy which Athletic won by beating Barcelona. He also has a tattoo of his son wearing an Athletic shirt.
The consensus belief is that Muniain will renew with Athletic and continue his career at his boyhood club. The Marca report even says that the 25-year-old is expected to stay at the San Mamés. However, these reports will now put even more of a spotlight in his current contract negotiations. When asked about the situation recently Muniain said, “Hopefully it will all be finalized soon”. That is certainly the hope of the club and fans as well.
