Beñat And Iñigo Lekue Return To Regular Training
One quarter of the La Liga season is in the books and Athletic may be the most healthy club in the entire league. Several players have struggled with injury and even sickness this year but all of that could now be in the past. On Monday the team returned to training Agee having the weekend off and for the first time this season everyone was able to participate in the session at Lezama.
As expected, Beñat was able to return to normal training after missing the last three games. The midfielder had to be hospitalized with an infection and fever and, after being discharged, spent all last week working with trainers apart from the group. He has already been cleared to play and could be back in the lineup on Monday against Espanyol.
Back in late August Iñigo Lekue suffered a fractured ankle during training that required surgery. Over the past few weeks he’s been doing running drills and ball work with Xabi Clemente and on Monday he was finally able to rejoin his teammates in regular training. It will likely still be some time before Lekue is available to play in a game, but he is closer than ever to making his season debut.
With a healthy squad available and an entire week to prepare for Monday’s game against Espanyol, fans will be demanding a strong performance from the Lions. Athletic are currently two spots ahead of the relegation zone and the team must start adding more points if they want to compete for a place in Europe. Espanyol have been playing great football this season and will be a serious test for the Basques on the road.
