Athletic Transfer Target Ibai Gómez Has Attracted Interest From England
Ibai Gómez is playing the best football of his career. Since leaving Athletic back in the summer of 2016 he’s become a star at Alavés and is currently one of the most dangerous forwards in all of La Liga. The 28-year-old has scored three goals so far this season and Athletic are interested in bringing him back to the San Mamés when his contract expires in June.
Athletic would love to see the return of Ibai Gómez who could bring more firepower to the team, but they will have competition. Several reports claim that Real Sociedad are also monitoring the player’s situation at Alavés as are some clubs from outside Spain. According to a report from Sergio López de Vicente of AS, a few clubs from England are also interested in signing Ibai Gómez with Leeds chief among them.
Leeds are currently coached by Marcelo Bielsa who led Athletic to major success from 2011-2013. A reunion between Ibai Gómez and El Loco can’t be ruled out at this point. Leeds tried to sign the forward over the summer, but he rejected the offer due to his desire to stay in Vitoria. Now the club is said to be hoping to negotiate with Alavés in January in order to have a better chance of signing Gómez before he can leave for free in the summer.
No matter what happens, Ibai Gómez will be the one who decides his future. So far he and Alavés have not talked about a contract renewal, but sources claim that the club wants to keep their star forward at Mendizorrotza. Ibai Gómez has always been outspoken about being an Athletic fan and his love for the club isn’t a secret. His feelings towards the Zurigorri could play a huge role in his decision, but he’s also admitted that he struggled to handle the pressures of playing at the San Mamés. That being said, Ibai Gómez isn’t the same player that left Bilbao back in 2016. He’s started a family, become a leader at Alavés, and Athletic are hoping that he’s ready to return home.
