Mikel San José was happy with his performance against Valencia (LaLiga)

Mikel San José made his first start of the season on Saturday as Athletic played Valencia to a scoreless draw at the San Mamés. After the match the 29-year-old spoke to beIN Sports and admitted that the result doesn’t help the team’s position in the La Liga table. That being said, he is confident in Eduardo Berizzo’s system and says that the Lions go into every game with the goal of winning.

“The point doesn’t help us much. Both teams wanted more because we are in a difficult streak. We are struggling to win and struggling to score goals. We were able to create some chances, but couldn’t score. We are satisfied with everyone’s work, which is good, but things aren’t going well lately. Berizzo’s ideas are good and we must be better. The team goes into every game with the intention of winning and to not make mistakes. Our mentality is always to win, especially at home. We are a team that takes risks and we need to have a good run to help us emotionally.

Berizzo has a lot of options to choose from in midfield which has made it difficult players like San José to enjoy regular minutes. He told reporters that he was happy with his performance on Saturday and says that he has to continue working hard in order to be chosen by the manager.

“The coach has many players to choose from and everyone can provide something different. We each have our own characteristics and the coach is the one who decides who plays. Both Mikel [Rico] and I, who have played fewer minutes, played well in the midfield. We were able to add physicality and we have to keep working because it doesn’t stop. There are a lot of games left and you have to always be prepared.”

After playing three games in one week Athletic will now have eight days to prepare for next Monday’s match against Espanyol. Beñat is expected to be available after recovering from sickness which means that Eduardo Berizzo should be able to field his strongest lineup. With the Basques currently two points off of the relegation zone they are in desperate need of a win and will be looking to turn things around against a surging Espanyol at RCDE Stadium.
