Eduardo Berizzo “I Feel Confident About This Team”
After playing Valencia to a scoreless draw on Saturday Athletic have now gone nine straight games without a victory. The match at the San Mamés was a much better performances from the Lions, but the fact that they were not able to pick up all three points still has fans disappointed. Eduardo Berizzo had plenty of praise for his players after the game, highlighted their aggressiveness.
“The team showed aggressiveness and defensive strength to earn a clean sheet. I have to emphasize that although we were not able to score ourselves. Pressure is a great weapon. We did it well and gave a solid image of the team. We were practical. We controlled the ball more than simply circulating it, although we couldn’t go forward against Valencia. There was more physical play than technical play and we took controlled risks. There is good news within the game, like the performance of Dani García. San José and Rico worked hard as well.”
Athletic had gone a few games without being able to establish their pressuring style of football, but that wasn’t the case against Valencia. Berizzo took the time to point that out, but also understands that the team needs to improve their place in the La Liga table moving forward.
“We wanted to rediscover our pressure and, in that sense, we took a step forward. Our place in the table is what it is and it weighs on us. Everyone would like to be more comfortable in the table or higher up, but you must have solidity and consistency. We have played a lot horizontally, but if we are more vertical we will be more effective. The match against Valencia makes me feel confident about this team. I’m sure what we did today was good.”
Athletic will be back in action on next Monday, 5 November, when they will travel to take on Espanyol. After playing three games in one week Berizzo will now have eight days to prepare for their next fixture and should be able to have field his strongest lineup against a team who have been playing great football as of late.
