Iñaki Williams “It Was Good Emotionally To Score A Goal”

Iñaki Williams was happy to score against Eibar on Sunday (LaLiga)

Iñaki Williams scored his second goal of the season on Sunday and it proved to be a big one. Athletic were trailing Eibar 1-0 when the 24-year-old found the back of the net which helped the Lions earn a point in a difficult match at Ipurua. After the game he told reporters that it was a good thing emotionally to score and that he is calm about his lack of goals at the San Mamés.

“My goal was a quick play. Iago cleared the ball, Aduriz touched it, and Rulo directed me towards goal. I just had to control the ball and finish. Emotionally, it was good to score a goal and I am going home happy for that. Those who support me know that I work very hard to score goals. I’m not obsessed with scoring. I’m calm and I know they will come at San Mamés.”

Sunday’s match also saw the return of Aritz Aduriz who has struggled with injuries this season. Iñaki admitted that he has learned to play in different positions for Athletic, but is always happy to have Aduriz on the field because of what the 37-year-old brings to the attack.

“I’m a player who has been shaped to play in several positions. Today I played on the left wing and I always try to contribute as much as I can. Aduriz is a great player. We always want him in the team and he helps us in attack. He commands the attention of the center-backs and defenders fear him.”

In closing, Iñaki defended manager Eduardo Berizzo who has come under fire after the club’s poor start to the season. He asked for fans to be calm and said that having the Argentine as the coach is a luxury for the team. Iñaki knows that Athletic are not in a good place right now and says that it’s up to the players to fix their situation.

“Eibar played on their field and they know what to do there. We were not successful with our pressure, but we worked to score a goal and that was a good thing. We are delighted with Berizzo. He is very good and we all know how we need to play. It’s a luxury to have him as our coach and we need to be calm. If we lost him we’d be screwed. The whole team is happy and we hope to give the fans joy on Wednesday. We don’t like being where we are in the table and we are the ones who have to fix it.”

Athletic currently have a game in hand over the rest of the league and will play that match on Wednesday as they travel to Vallecas to take on Rayo. At this point in the season it is a must win fixture and the Lions could climb into the top half of the table if they are able to come away with a win in Madrid.
