Iago Herrerín “I Think I Did Well After Going So Long Without Playing”
Iago Herrerín made his season debut on Sunday when Athletic draw 1-1 with Eibar. The goalkeeper had been out of action since the preseason when he suffered a biceps injury and played a big role in the game at Ipurua, making four spectacular saves. After the match he told reporters that he was happy with his performance.
“I think I did well after going so long without playing. There was a bit of anxiety at times, but it was a good night. I’ve gotten my first minutes and found myself comfortable. I hope to continue like this. It’s important to add a point after the break and in the next important match against Rayo we will go for three points.”
Herrerín also admitted that it is hard to play at Ipurua and that teams usually have to adapt a different style against Eibar. It was a difficult game and Athletic knew that was going to be the case going into the match.
“Ipurua is a tough place to play and it’s often difficult to play our way. The field is small and a lot of times you have to adjust to their style. They didn’t have many chances either. It’s been a tough game. We knew it was doing to be decided by small details and that was the case.”
Wednesday’s match against Rayo Vallecano was originally scheduled for late September but had to be pushed due to stadium concerns at Vallecas. If Athletic can earn a victory in Madrid they would jump into the top half of the La Liga table. It certainly won’t be an easy fixture, but it is a perfect opportunity that the Basques have to take advantage of at this point in the season.
