Bilbao Athletic 1-3 Mirandés: Lezama Unbeaten Streak Comes To An End
Bilbao Athletic’s difficult stretch of matches continued on Saturday when they hosted Mirandés at Lezama. The Katxorros had not lost a game since 20 August, 2017 and were keen to keep their unbeaten streak alive while also getting back to their winning ways. Gaizka Garitano started a very strong lineup and the two sides were evenly matched from the start.
After fifteen minutes of action Iñigo Vicente would open up the scoring with some of his magic. The forward received the ball in the box and calmly chipped to keeper to give Bilbao Athletic an early 1-0 lead. The Basques were feeling confident and started looking for a second quickly, but Mirandés were able to respond and level the score when Rama sent a shot off the bar and into the back of the net.
The home side had a few more chances through Victory San Bartomolomé and Gaizka Larrazabal but were unable to regain the lead before the end of the first half. Things chanced quite a bit in the second half with Mirandés going on the attack and Hodei Oleaga forced to make a few really good saves. The match looked like it was heading for a draw until former Lezama winger, Yanis Rahmani, scored in the 88th minute to give Mirandés the lead.
Garitano responded by making two substitutions and sending his team further up into the final third. The Katxorros pushed for a late equalizer but it wouldn’t come. Medina would score a third for the visitors in stoppage time to hand Bilbao Athletic a 3-1 loss and end their unbeaten streak at Lezama at 425 days. Bilbao Athletic have now lost three of their last four games and will travel to take on Arenas Club next Saturday as they look to right the ship.
