Athletic celebrate a goal against Huesca at San Mamés (LaLiga)

After an embarrassing exit from last year’s Copa del Rey, Athletic are looking for redemption and hoping to make a deep run in the tournament this season. On Friday the drawing for the round of 32 took place and fans eagerly waited to see which team the Lions would be matched up against. The Basques could not be drawn against a Primera club currently playing in Europe, but there were still plenty of difficult opponents available.

Athletic would eventually be drawn against newly promoted Huesca who played the Lions to a 2-2 draw at the San Mamés in the second game of the season. The first match will take place in Bilbao was originally set to be played on 31 October, but will have to be rescheduled due to an MTV concert at San Mamés on 3 November. RFEF and La Liga were aware of the situation before the draw and the two clubs are already in talks to reschedule the match. The return leg is currently scheduled for 5 December and is subject to change as well.

Huesca have proven to be a difficult opponent this season in La Liga. They may only have one win on the year, but they play courageous football and aren’t afraid to attack their opponents. Athletic will have to be at their best if they are going to advance to the next round of the Copa del Rey where they would likely meet another team from the Primera.
