Beñat Admitted To Local Hospital With Infection And High Fever
Athletic are currently preparing for Sunday’s Basque Derby against Eibar but will likely have to play the match without midfielder Beñat. The 31-year-old did not take part in Thursday’s training session due to sickness and later that evening Athletic announced that he had been admitted to a local hospital with an acute infection and high fever. The club also stated that complimentary tests and analysis are being performed.
Unless Beñat makes a very rapid recovery he will miss the match against Eibar. His availability for Wednesday’s game against Rayo Vallecano is still to be determined, but the most important thing is always the player’s health. Beñat had started the last five games for Athletic and during Thursday’s session at Lezama Unai López trained in his place and could be the one to start at Ipurua.
The Lions will play three games in one week starting with Sunday’s Derby which means that Eduardo Berizzo will have some difficult decisions to make regarding his squad rotation. Luckily, Athletic are relatively healthy coming out of the international break with Iñigo Lekue, who is still recovering from a fractured ankle, the only other player who didn’t train on Thursday. The hope is that Beñat isn’t dealing with anything serious and will be discharged on Friday. We at Inside Athletic want to wish him a complete and speedy recovery.
