Athletic Train Against Basconia In Private Session On Thursday

Berizzo Yuri Ganea Training

Eduardo Berizzo leads training at Lezama (MD)

The international break has come to a close and Athletic are solely focused on Sunday’s Basque Derby against Eibar at Ipurua. Unai Nuñez and Unai Simón returned to the squad after spending the past two weeks away with Spain’s U21 team and Eduardo Berizzo will have nearly his entire squad available for this weekend. Iñigo Lekue, who is still recovering from a fractured ankle, missed training as did Beñat who had to be admitted to a local hospital with a high fever and infection.

Thursday’s training session took place behind closed doors, but there was something a bit different about it. Berizzo split the squad into two groups and spent time training on separate fields with the two teams playing scrimmage matches against feeder club CD Basconia. The manager put a heavy emphasis on intense pressure and creating chances when in possession. Aritz Solabarrieta’s squad also spent time training alongside the first team players.

The Lions haven’t won a game since the league opener against Leganés, but that could finally change on Sunday. Aritz Aduriz is expected to be back in the starting lineup and the team has spent the entire international break working on correcting the mistakes that have cost the team points this season. With almost the entire squad available and two weeks to prepare, Athletic have the perfect chance to get their season back on track at Ipurua.
