Ander Capa “I Would Love To Be In The Starting Lineup And Experience Ipurua In A Different Way”
Athletic Club will play their second straight Basque Derby on Sunday when they travel to Ipurua to take on Eibar. For some Lions it will be an even more special game than usual, and Ander Capa couldn’t be more excited. The 26-year-old spent the last seven years with Eibar and is now hopeful that he will be able to start against his former club after dealing with a muscle injury last week.
“Last week I was dealing with a muscle injury but on Monday I was already cleared to play this weekend. It’s going to be a special and emotional game. Like anyone else, I would love to play at the field where I have so many good memories. I had good feelings at Ipurua and made memories that I will never forget. I’m more motivated for this game than the one against Real Sociedad. I would love to be in the starting lineup and experience Ipurua in a different way. I really want to play.”
During Thursday’s press conference Capa was asked about his path from joining Eibar B back in 2011 to reaching the top flight. He admitted that it isn’t something he really thinks about much, stating that it is difficult to stay at the highest level. He believes that he left Eibar the right way and is hoping to be welcomed back to Ipurua on Sunday.
“I don’t really think a lot about everything I’ve achieved. I arrived at Eibar at 19 and each year we were able to earn promotion. I made my debut in the Primera which is a very difficult thing to do. Now the difficult thing is keeping that same level and I hope to be here for many more years. I think that I left Eibar in a good way with the team and with the fans. I hope they welcome me back well. It’s a weird feeling.”
So far this season Capa has been used as a substitute, while also spending some time in a more advanced role. He says that he is calm about his place in the squad and is patiently waiting for his chance to play more minutes and prove that he can give a lot to the team this season.
“I came to a new club with a new coach. I’ve had to adapt to things because I didn’t know how things were going to be. I’m calm. I’m waiting for my time to prove that I can give a lot to the team. We have three games this week and the entire squad will be needed. At one point I said that I didn’t think I would ever play on the wing again but that hasn’t been the case. The Mister has put me on a wing a few times and I’ve played well and with confidence. I think it’s good for the team to have more options.”
When asked about what to expect from Eibar Capa explained that both clubs are familiar with each other. The important thing is for Athletic to player their style of football and not give Eibar anything easy. Capa also isn’t worried about the team’s current place in the league table because the season is still young and he’s confident that better results will come.
“They have seen all of our games and know how we will play. Against Eibar we will see them try to have the ball on the wings and looking for their forwards like Sergi Enrich or Charles. That’s what I’m expecting. We are going to play our style. Taking initiative, keeping possession, pressing…We have to fix some of the nuances in the final third and create more chances. There is a lot of season left so there’s no need to look at the numbers. We will continue playing our type of football and everything will come together.”
Athletic will play three games over the course of the week starting with Sunday’s Derby. The Lions have a great opportunity to start adding more points and begin climbing the La Liga table, but it won’t be easy. Eibar have played well this year and will demand the very best from Athletic. Luckily, Eduardo Berizzo will be able to field his strongest lineup as the Zurigorri look to turn things around coming out of the international break.
