Iñigo Lekue Begins Recovery Work At Lezama After Fracturing Ankle In August
With all of the drama surrounding Athletic at the start of the season it is easy to forget that the club has had to deal with several different injuries. Most notably, Iñigo Lekue suffered a broken ankle back on 23 August and had to undergo surgery four days later. Eduardo Berizzo said that he had plans for the 25-year-old whenever he was able to return and Lekue took a positive step in that direction this week.
Wednesday’s session was closed to the public, but before training began Iñigo Lekue was seen jogging with trainer Xabi Clemente. The Lezama graduate did running drills for about 30 minutes before the rest of his teammates took the field and he was greeted by Eduardo Berizzo. Lekue’s recovery remains on the expected timeline and the hope is that he will be able to be cleared to play before the end of the calendar year.
Athletic are still without Unai Simón and Unai Nuñez, who are currently on international duty with the Spain U21 team. Meanwhile, Peru Nolaskoain returned to training with the first team on Wednesday after spending the last few days with Bilbao Athletic. Ander Capa continued to train normally after missing sessions last week and has already been cleared to play in Sunday’s Basque Derby against Eibar at Ipurua.
