Several Clubs Have Reportedly Shown Interest In Signing Athletic Club Defender Unai Nuñez
Unai Nuñez’s place in the Athletic Club squad is in question. After playing in 36 total matches last year, the 21-year-old has only featured once this season with new manager Eduardo Berizzo preferring the center-back pairing of Yeray and Iñigo Martinez. He’s even been left out of the team altogether on some occasions with Toto choosing to call up Peru Nolaskoain instead. With uncertainty surrounding the defender other clubs are taking notice.
According to a breaking report from Juanma Velasco of Marca, several clubs have been monitoring the situation and are interested in signing Unai Nuñez. Barcelona, Espanyol, and Real Sociedad were all listed as clubs who are considering a move for the 21-year-old, but there are others in Spain and potentially some in England as well. Despite not enjoying regular minutes with Athletic, Nuñez has consistently been called up to Spain’s U21 team where he has been able to showcase his quality.
Last season Nuñez signed a renewal with Athletic which extended his contract to 2023 and raised his release clause to €30 million. Any interested club would have to meet that fee if they wanted to sign the Lezama product. At this point neither Nuñez nor Athletic have dropped any hints about the player’s future. He has always wanted to succeed at Athletic, but he also wants to play regular minutes which has been difficult this season without European competition.
It is clear that Berizzo views Nuñez as the backup to Yeray at right center-back with Nolaskoain being the backup to Martinez on the left. As the season progresses and the need to rotate players becomes even more important it will be very telling to see how the manager handles Unai Nuñez. Athletic certainly do not want to lose the starlet, but other clubs will continue to monitor the situation over the coming months.
