Manchester United Reportedly Interested In Signing Athletic’s Alex Remiro And Could Include Ander Herrera In Swap Deal
Alex Remiro’s situation at Athletic is clear. President Josu Urrutia recently stated in a press conference that the 23-year-old told the club that he has no desire to renew his expiring contract and wants to leave the San Mamés. The once highly touted Lezama product is now set to make his exit with several clubs interested in signing him, but the drama just got a lot more interesting.
According to a breaking report from Ángel López of Mundo Deportivo, Remiro and Real Sociedad reach an agreement a few months ago that will see the goalkeeper join the club when he contract expires at the end of June. At the time Kepa Arrizabalaga and Iago Herrerín stood in front of Remiro’s path to the first team and the 23-year-old made the decision that he would leave. This has been the biggest reason why he has refused to negotiate an extension with Athletic, but there is now concern from Real Sociedad with another team stepping up.
The report goes on to say that Manchester United have shown interest in signing Remiro and are entertaining the idea of negotiating a deal in the January transfer window. Despite Remiro’s contract expiring a few months later, the English side are said to be willing to compensate Athletic for the transfer and are also considering a swap deal which would send Ander Herrera back to the San Mamés in exchange for Remiro. Athletic’s desire to sign Herrera is common knowledge at this point which would make this a massive deal if the report is true.
For now the report should be taken with a grain of salt. Manchester United already have a world class goalkeeper in David De Gea and a reliable backup in Sergio Romero. Interest in Remiro seems odd at the moment, but that also doesn’t mean it isn’t true. At the same time, Herrera doesn’t seem to be a part of Jose Mourinho’s plans at United and Athletic have every intention of trying to sign the midfielder in January. This will certainly be a big story to watch over the next few months but one thing is clear, Real Sociedad’s interest in Remiro is serious.
